How to Make Your Coursework Stand Out From Other Students
If you have ever looked at a coursework brief and thought, “Everyone in my class is going to write about the same thing,” you are probably right.
The topic may be identical. The reading list may be identical. Even the recommended sources might be identical. Yet some assignments still feel noticeably stronger than others.
The difference usually isn't that one student knows twice as much. It is that they make better decisions about what to include, how to use evidence and where to take their argument.
When I approach coursework, I think of it less as a collection of information and more as a case I am building for the reader. My job is not simply to prove that I have done the reading. I need to show that I understand it, can question it and can use it to answer the actual question.
That is what makes coursework stand out.
Start With the Question, Not Google
One of the easiest mistakes to make is opening a search engine before properly understanding the assignment.
You see the topic, search for it and start collecting articles. A few hours later, you have twenty tabs open and no clear idea what your coursework is actually arguing.
I prefer to reverse that process.
Read the title carefully and identify the instruction word. Words such as analyse, evaluate, compare, assess and discuss require different approaches.
For example, “Discuss the impact of inflation on household consumption” gives you room to explore different effects and explanations.
“Evaluate the effectiveness of monetary policy in controlling inflation” is different. Here, you need to make a judgement about effectiveness and support that judgement with evidence.
Before researching, write down three things:
- What exactly is the question asking?
- What issues will I need to investigate?
- What would I need to prove to answer it convincingly?
This small exercise can save a surprising amount of time later.
Have an Argument Before You Have an Essay
A coursework assignment becomes much easier to write once you know what you think the evidence will show.
That does not mean deciding your conclusion before doing any research. It means having a working position that you are prepared to change.
Try finishing this sentence:
“My argument is that…”
If your answer is something like “my argument is that inflation is complicated”, you need to go further.
Perhaps your position is that a particular policy can reduce inflation but creates significant costs elsewhere. Or perhaps you believe that one explanation is more convincing than another, but only under certain conditions.
That gives your research a purpose.
Good academic writing is not simply about reporting what other people have said. Critical writing involves interpreting evidence, drawing conclusions from it and considering questions such as “why?”, “what if?” and “so what?”. This is also how UCL describes critical analysis in academic writing.
Your own argument is the thread connecting those pieces of evidence.
Stop Treating Sources Like a Checklist
A reference list containing thirty sources can look impressive, but the number of references tells the reader very little about the quality of your reasoning.
What matters is how you use them.
Imagine you are writing about a particular economic policy. You could cite one study after another:
“Smith found X. Jones found Y. Brown found Z.”
Technically, you have demonstrated research. But you have not necessarily demonstrated understanding.
Instead, put those sources into conversation with each other.
One study might support your argument, while another reaches a different conclusion. Perhaps the difference comes from the countries studied, the time period or the research method.
That gives you something worth discussing.
For example:
Although the first study suggests that the policy improves employment, later evidence indicates that the effect may depend on the condition of the wider economy.
Now you are doing more than repeating information. You are comparing evidence and identifying a condition that could change the conclusion.
That is the kind of critical analysis markers are looking for.
Choose Evidence That Does Some Work
Whenever you add a statistic, quotation or academic source, ask yourself what job it is doing.
Does it:
- Support a claim?
- Challenge an argument?
- Provide context?
- Demonstrate a trend?
- Show a limitation?
- Offer an alternative explanation?
- Help you reach your final judgement?
If you cannot answer that question, you may not need the evidence.
I also recommend going as close to the original source as possible. Government statistics, academic research, professional organisations and original datasets are generally more useful than a random website summarising them.
This matters particularly when you are using numbers. A statistic without context can easily create a misleading impression.
Don't just tell the reader that something increased by 20%. Explain what increased, over what period, how it was measured and why the change matters to your argument.
The number attracts attention. Your interpretation gives it meaning.
Use Examples That Make the Theory Concrete
Theory can become dry very quickly.
A strong example gives the reader something real to connect to the concept you are explaining.
Suppose your coursework examines price elasticity of demand. Rather than spending an entire section defining the concept, you could apply it to a specific product or market and explore why consumers might respond differently to a price change.
The same principle works in business, law, psychology, sociology, politics and other subjects.
The example doesn't have to be unusual. It just needs to be relevant.
More importantly, don't let the example take over the essay.
The purpose is not to tell an interesting story. The purpose is to use the example to test or illustrate your argument.
A useful question is:
“What does this example allow me to demonstrate that a definition alone cannot?”
If you can answer that clearly, you probably have a worthwhile example.
Make Your Paragraphs Do More
A common weakness in coursework is the information-heavy paragraph.
It begins with a topic, introduces several facts, cites two or three sources and finishes without explaining why any of it matters.
I would give each paragraph a clear job.
A useful pattern is:
Point → Evidence → Explanation → Evaluation → Link
Start with a specific point.
Then bring in evidence.
Explain what that evidence tells us.
After that, evaluate it. Is there a limitation? Does another source disagree? Is the finding only applicable in certain circumstances?
Finally, connect the discussion back to the question.
That last step is particularly important.
You do not want your marker thinking, “Interesting, but why am I reading this?”
UCL's guidance makes a similar point: critical academic writing should show relationships between ideas and evidence rather than treating sources as isolated pieces of information.
Don't Confuse Description With Analysis
This is probably the single biggest writing issue I would look for when improving coursework.
Description tells me what happened.
Analysis explores why it happened, how it happened and what it means.
Evaluation goes one step further by asking how convincing the explanation is.
For example:
Description:
“The government increased interest rates to reduce inflation.”
Analysis:
“Higher interest rates can reduce aggregate demand by increasing borrowing costs and encouraging saving.”
Evaluation:
“However, the effectiveness of this approach depends partly on how sensitive households and businesses are to borrowing costs. If existing fixed-rate borrowing is substantial, the immediate effect on demand may be weaker.”
The third version gives you something to argue about.
You do not need to turn every sentence into a philosophical debate. But your major sections should contain enough interpretation and evaluation to demonstrate independent thinking.
Compare Sources Instead of Listing Them
Another simple way to improve coursework is to stop writing about each source separately.
Imagine three researchers reach broadly similar conclusions.
You could explain each study in three separate paragraphs.
Or you could ask why their conclusions are similar.
Perhaps all three used comparable datasets. Perhaps they studied the same period. Perhaps their findings become less convincing when applied to a different population.
Now the sources become evidence in your discussion rather than the subjects of the discussion.
This also helps reduce unnecessary repetition.
Instead of saying:
“Author A says…”
“Author B says…”
“Author C says…”
you can write:
“Taken together, these studies suggest…”
Then explain where they agree and where they differ.
That makes the writing feel much more controlled.
Be Precise When You Disagree
You don't have to disagree with established researchers just to appear critical.
Forced criticism is easy to spot.
Sometimes the evidence really does support an established position. Your contribution might instead be showing that the conclusion has limits.
Phrases such as these can help you think more carefully:
- “This interpretation is persuasive because…”
- “However, the evidence is less conclusive when…”
- “A limitation of this argument is…”
- “This finding may not apply to…”
- “An alternative explanation is…”
- “The strength of this conclusion depends on…”
Academic writing benefits from matching the strength of your language to the strength of your evidence.
If a study suggests something, don't write that it “proves” something.
If evidence comes from a narrow sample, don't casually generalise it to everyone.
Being precise is not the same as being uncertain. It shows that you understand what your evidence can actually support.
Give Your Introduction a Reason to Exist
A long introduction isn't automatically a good introduction.
You don't need several paragraphs explaining that your subject is “an important issue in today's rapidly changing world”.
Your reader already knows what the assignment is about.
Instead, get to the point.
A useful introduction should establish the subject, clarify the focus of the question, indicate the areas you will examine and give the reader a sense of your overall position.
Then move on.
The same applies to your conclusion. Don't simply repeat every point you have already made.
Use the conclusion to answer the question directly.
If the coursework asks you to evaluate something, make the evaluation unmistakable.
Edit for Meaning, Not Just Grammar
Proofreading is important, but there is a difference between correcting mistakes and improving an argument.
I like to make several editing passes rather than trying to fix everything simultaneously.
First pass: Follow the argument
Read only for logic.
Can you see why each section comes after the previous one?
Second pass: Check the evidence
Look at your claims and ask whether they are properly supported.
Third pass: Find weak analysis
Highlight paragraphs that mainly describe information.
Ask whether they need explanation, comparison or evaluation.
Fourth pass: Cut unnecessary wording
Remove sentences that repeat an earlier point.
Shorter writing is often stronger writing.
Fifth pass: Check the brief
Return to the original question and marking criteria.
Make sure you haven't written a very good essay that answers the wrong question.
Don't Try to “Beat” Turnitin
There is a common misconception that good coursework means achieving a particular Turnitin percentage.
That's not really how the system works.
Turnitin says its Similarity Report identifies text that matches material in its database; it does not itself determine whether plagiarism has occurred. Properly quoted and referenced material can also generate matches. Conversely, a low similarity score does not automatically mean that a piece of work is academically sound.
So don't waste time trying to manipulate a percentage.
Instead, make sure your work is genuinely yours, cite sources correctly and paraphrase because you understand the material not because you are trying to disguise copied wording.
That distinction matters.
Be Sensible About AI
AI tools can be useful for learning, but assessed coursework comes with rules.
Universities and individual modules can have different requirements around acceptable AI use, disclosure and assessment. The QAA's 2026 work highlights considerable variation in how generative AI policies are implemented across higher education.
So before using an AI tool on an assignment, check the rules for that particular assessment.
More importantly, don't let a tool replace the thinking your coursework is supposed to demonstrate.
If you use technology to help understand a difficult concept, generate questions for further research or identify areas you need to investigate, you still need to verify the information and follow your institution's requirements.
Your finished assignment should reflect knowledge you can explain and defend yourself.
Get Someone to Challenge Your Draft
You don't necessarily need someone to rewrite your coursework.
Sometimes you simply need another person to tell you where the argument becomes unclear.
If your course permits feedback on drafts, ask a tutor or peer specific questions:
- Is my main argument clear?
- Does this paragraph answer the question?
- Where am I describing rather than analysing?
- Is my conclusion strong enough?
- Have I missed an important counterargument?
Specific questions produce much more useful feedback than “What do you think?”

The important thing is to use academic support to strengthen your understanding rather than replacing your own assessed work.
The Coursework That Stands Out Is Usually the One That Thinks
There is no secret formatting trick that guarantees a high mark.
You don't need the longest bibliography in the class. You don't need vocabulary that sounds like it came from a nineteenth-century dictionary. And you certainly don't need to fill every paragraph with quotations.
What you need is a clear answer to the question.
Research with a purpose. Choose evidence carefully. Compare sources. Explain your reasoning. Acknowledge limitations. Use examples to test your ideas. Then edit until the reader can follow your argument without having to work it out for themselves.
If I had to reduce the whole process to one question, it would be this:
“What am I adding to this discussion?”
If your coursework consistently answers that question, it will feel different from an assignment that simply repeats what everyone else has already found.
The subject might be the same.
The sources might overlap.
But the thinking will be yours and that is what makes coursework stand ou
